Munich to Nuremberg to Berlin Tour May 18th to May 27th, 2012

Dates: Arrive in Munich by 7 PM (Dinner) May 18th and Depart Berlin May 27th
(We are in Munich for 4 days so arriving a day late is readily do-able.)
Itinerary:

Day 1 Munich (May 18th, Friday)
Welcome to Munich!
Upon arrival transfer to our Munich hotel. Spend the afternoon free at leisure to explore the city surroundings. Enjoy the group 7 PM "Welcome" dinner at the hotel..

Day 2 Munich/Dachau (May 19th, Saturday)
Breakfast in hotel.
After breakfast, depart with our guide and coach on a half day sightseeing tour of Munich. See many significant sites such as the buildings of the Third Reich. Visit the famous Hofbrauhaus, the world’s largest beer hall, where you drink beer by the liter and soak in the classic German culture of live bands and servers in their lederhosen. It’s also the birth place of the Nazi Party. See the site of the Chamberlain-Hitler Munich Agreement. In the afternoon, make a trip to Dachau (only if it is your wish) and tour the concentration camp. It was the first Nazi concentration camp and was in use from 1933 – 1960. For the first 12 years, it was an internment center of the Third Reich. The camp harbored multiple kinds of prisoners from every nation occupied by the forces of the Third Reich. After the tour, return to our hotel for dinner. Overnight accommodations in Munich.

Day 3 Salzburg (May 20th, Sunday)
Breakfast in hotel.
After breakfast, depart with our escort and coach on a full day sightseeing tour of Salzburg. Upon arrival, meet our guide. Visit Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle’s Nest, in Berchtesgaden. It’s a chalet-style structure built as an extension of the Obersalzberg complex erected by the Nazis in the mountains above Berchtesgaden. Journey up the Kehlstein road and ride the luxurious brass elevator up through the rock into Kehlsteinhaus. ‘The Eagle’s Nest’ was intended as a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler to serve as a retreat for Hitler and a place for him to entertain his visitors. Also visit the Documentation Center and go through the exhibit and tunnels focusing on Hitler and WWII from the German perspective. See what Obersalzberg looked like 60 years ago when exploring the underground bunkers. Etch your name and home town on the walls of the bunkers as American soldiers occupying the area in 1945. Taste the culture of Salzburg at a local restaurant for lunch with our group. See Salzburg by coach before returning to Munich. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight accommodations in Munich.

Day 4 Neuschwanstein/Munich (May 21st, Monday)
Breakfast in hotel.
After breakfast, depart with our escort and coach on a full day excursion to Neuschwanstein Castle. This castle is a 19th century Gothic revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau. Commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and homage to Richard Wagner, this castle was later the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Return to Munich via the Wieskirche, the Pilgrimage Church of Wies an oval rococo church, designed in the late 1740s, located in the foothills of the Alps. Wieskirche was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. Continue to to Munich. Enjoy group dinner at the hotel. Overnight accommodations in Munich.

Day 5 Nuremberg (May 22nd, Tuesday)
Breakfast in hotel.
After breakfast, depart with our escort and coach to Nuremberg for a half day sightseeing tour of the old town. Upon arrival, meet our guide. Nuremberg held great significance during the Nazi Germany era. Because of the city's relevance to the Holy Roman Empire and its position in the center of Germany, the Nazi Party chose the city to be the site of huge Nazi Party conventions, known as the Nuremberg rallies. The rallies were held annually from 1927 to 1938 in Nuremberg. After Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933, the Nuremberg rallies became huge Nazi propaganda events, a center of Nazi ideals. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, continue on to tour the Reichsparteitag, where the Nuremberg laws were written and Nazi leaders tried, as well as the documentation center, located in the former Congress Hall. Our tour returns, ending at the hotel. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight accommodations in Nuremberg.

Day 6 Buchenwald/Berlin (May 23rd, Wednesday)
Breakfast in hotel.
After breakfast, depart with our English speaking escort and coach to Berlin. En route, our coach will pass through Weimar (sightseeing/shopping is an option for those not wishing to visit Buchenwald concentration camp that was one of the major Nazi camps located on Ettersberg Hill near Weimar. Buchenwald remained one of the major camps throughout the history of the Third Reich, with numerous sub camps under its administration. This specific camp was not an extermination camp but the guards starved, maltreated and worked prisoners to death. After the Weimar/camp visit we continue to Berlin. Dinner at the hotel with the group. Overnight accommodations in Berlin.

Day 7 Berlin (May 24th, Thursday)
Breakfast in hotel.
After breakfast, depart with our guide and coach on a half day sightseeing tour of the city of Berlin. See numerous historical sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and Soviet Memorial, flanked by the reknown Russian T34 tanks. See the Holocaust Memorial to the Jewish people lost in WWII, the former wartime Ministry of Propaganda to name but a few. Enjoy German cuisine for lunch under on your own and return to the hotel at the end the tour. Your afternoon is free. Dinner at our hotel with the group. Overnight accommodations in Berlin.

Day 8 Berlin/Potsdam (May 25th, Friday)
Breakfast in hotel.
After breakfast, depart with our guide and coach on a full day excursion to Potsdam. See famous sights such as the Manor House of Cecilienhof, where the Potsdam Agreement was signed (Truman, Attlee and Stalin) that ended WWII. In the afternoon, drive over to the House of the Wannsee Conference, where the head of the Reich Security, Reinhard Heydrich, chaired the significant meeting to resolve "The Final Solution". Enjoy a group lunch at a local German restaurant. Return to our Berlin hotel for dinner and overnight accommodations.

Day 9 Berlin (May 26th, Saturday)
Breakfast in hotel.
After breakfast, depart with our escort and coach on a full day excursion to Seelow Hills, where we will have a guided battlefield tour. The Battle of Seelow Heights, is named after the hill fifty meters west of the Oder River, which saw some of the heaviest fighting of World War II between the defending Germans and the Russians assaulting the Berlin defenses. Seelow Heights had been turned into a fortress honeycombed with anti-tank guns, field artillery, tanks, anti-aircraft batteries, and infantry trenches. Lunch at a local restaurant. Return to Berlin for our "Farewell" dinner at our hotel and overnight accommodations.

Day 10 Departure to USA or otherwise (May 27th, Sunday)
Breakfast in hotel.
Transfers to airport. Have a safe flight!
